St Joseph's Pennisula State Park

Today we tried our luck at fishing from the dock, close to where the shuttle ferries over to St Vincent's.  Our only "keeper" was  one whiting before deciding we should pack up our pop-up and move to our next stop before the threatening weather let loose on us.  We drove onto Cape San Blas north to the state park and set up our camp, once again eluding the rain until after we were safely ensconced inside the camper.  This was a good reading afternoon although Nana did take a short walk on the Gulf side of our camp.

That night  tropical storm/Hurricane Humberto moved into Texas, and we felt the bands of rain--in fact that night the rain itself was quite loud as it fell in sheets onto  our modest abode.  About 3:30 a.m. we were awakened with a loud crash.  Upon opening the front door we realized that the canopy, set up as a porch at the front door, had become filled with water, as apparently we'd not set it up properly to slant  so that the rain would pour off the vinyl.  It was ripped through the middle, and one of the supporting metal rods had snapped in two!  Surprisingly, we did manage to return to sleep and pulled the calamity aside in the morning.

Taking it all in stride, the next morning dawned sunny as we entered our kayaks for a ride into St Joseph's Bay to try our luck fishing, using a bit of frozen squid.  The Bay is beautiful, and as we had discovered while snorkeling, is a treasure trove of sea life.

We did catch catfish, pinfish, a sea trout, and Nana caught a decent sized redfish.

That night Dan and Dee visited us at the campground to drop off bicycles and we feasted on charcoal-grilled fish and tossed salad, with a bit of chardonnay thrown in for lubrication!  We were happy campers!

From our campground at St Joseph Peninsula State Park, we could hear a multitude of bullfrogs during the torrential downpour.  We caught the wondrous sight of a large barred owl as it flapped its way through the trees, landing on a distant branch, and saw quite a few of the Cape Blas Deer.  They are cautious of humans but not overly frightened by us.
